Helping Your Animals Through Challenging Times

We all know that animals have a lot of the same feelings and emotions as us humans. They get sad when someone dies, they can be happy when their owner comes home after being away for a while, and they can feel left out when they are not included in something. But there are also times where an animal is going through difficult times because of things happening in their environment or to them personally.

The worst thing you could do in this situation is ignore it or hope that it will go away on its own. This would be like ignoring your child who has been bullied at school and hoping that he/she will just stop feeling hurt after a few days without any help from you. Instead, if you want to help your animal through these difficult times then you should look for signs that something is not right with your animal and find out what it could be, and if there is anything you can do to help them feel better. Here is a list of some common reasons why an animal may be showing signs of sadness or stress:

What can you do to help yourself and your animal companions?

Here are some tips on how to make your pet feel better during challenging times.

Provide comfort

This is one of the most important things you can do when your pet is going through a difficult time. They need to know that they are safe and that everything will be okay. Some animals also might find it comforting if their owner pats them gently or strokes their fur.

Stay calm and give reassurance

Animals pick up on any feelings we have, like fear and sadness. So if you’re stressed about what’s happening, then your animal could sense it and get very scared too. It’s really important that we stay calm and reassure them that everything is going to be fine.

Do not leave them alone

If your animal is very scared or nervous, then leaving them by themselves might only make things worse. For example, if they are freaked out by thunderstorms, then you should stay with them so they don’t feel like it’s just them against nature. You should also try and calm yourself down as well; there are plenty of self-help guides available online which can provide you with strategies for coping with stress (such as meditation). Try not to turn to alcohol or illegal drugs either because this could make the situation worse for both of you.

Protect their physical needs

There are some things that happen during tough times that will require that you attend to your animals physical needs, but it is still a good idea to try and keep their stress levels down. While taking care of them you should make sure that they do not become overwhelmed by fear or anxiety. Keep things calm and consistent while trying to find ways to comfort them at the same time.

Know when to get professional help

Animals don’t have the language skills needed to properly express themselves so it can be difficult for us humans to know when something is wrong with them. If you have tried all of this and your animal companion seems even more agitated, stressed or upset then you should probably consider contacting a professional who can help shed some light on the situation. There are some individuals out there who might just need some extra support during such times such as a veterinarian or animal behaviorist.

What should NOT be done?

Here are some of the things that you should definitely avoid when an animal is going through challenging times:

Being impatient and/or harsh on your animal companion – This could make things even worse for them and they will sense your bad vibes, which will only add to their stress levels. Be patient and use encouraging/positive words to help soothe them instead.

Be aggressive with them – Some animals might interpret this as a threat and then become defensive themselves. So no rough-housing or playing aggressively at this time because it can result in serious injury or harm to your pet.

Do not scold them – When a pet is scared or nervous, then they can’t always control their behavior and might unintentionally do something that could be considered as naughty. For example, if your dog has been barking excessively because there’s a thunderstorm going on outside, then you should never blame them for it. This will only make them feel bad about themselves and increase their stress levels even more.
