Cats and Their Interaction With Humans

Cats and their interaction with humans is a common topic of discussion. What is the best way to take care of adult cats? How should cat owners treat adult cats? Furthermore, what does it mean for a cat owner to train their adult cat? Is training adult cats possible? Cats and their interaction with humans are extensive and complex, but we’ve done the research so you don’t have to.

Cat expert Eric Edsinger discusses how adult cats behave and interact with humans: “As adult housecats grow older, they continue to be playful when given the opportunity.” He continues by discussing that adult housecats are able to play on their own with toys, but when in contact with human owners, adult cats can become interactive and more social.

It is important to note that adult cats are playful, but this play does not need adult supervision or intervention. It takes place on the cat’s time scale which may be hours apart. The essential thing for adult cat owners to understand is that adult housecats’ interaction with humans through playing should not be forced upon them; adult cats will initiate playtime when they are good and ready!

Human interaction

Cat expert Eric Edsinger discusses why adult cats prefer their own company to human interaction: “Play in adult cats helps maintain physical fitness, develop hunting skills, plan for the future, practice socialization tactics among themselves.” He continues by discussing how adult cats use playtime as a form of training for hunting and socialization. Edsinger then addresses that adult cats are not as dependent on humans for playtime, but adult housecats may look to human owners when they need training.

Adult cats are completely self-sufficient, even when it comes to playtime. Although cat owners may feel tempted to engage in the same playtime activities with their adult cats, this is not necessary nor advisable. If an owner wants their adult housecat to interact with them, it’s best if they focus on creating a great rapport through other means, such as grooming and cuddling.

How did cats originate?

Most scientists like to think of cats as belonging to the family Felidae, which includes about 38 genera.

John Bradshaw has written extensively on human interactions with cats and what they call “the cat domestication syndrome.” His research suggests that humans have exerted a sustained social selection pressure on the cat throughout its history in order to ensure it hunts prey that is easy for humans to exploit in different ways, neglecting major wild prey animals in the process.

Litter box

A litter box is also litter for litter’s sake–we use litter boxes when our cats are declawed because they can’t bury their messes when there are no claws, so we don’t have to worry about litter tracked all over our house!

A litter box is simply littered for litter’s sake. If your house has litter on the floor, it was caused by poor litter management rather than litter-purposeful litterings like scratching posts or toys. The litter itself can be used as an inexpensive toy!

The indoor cat phenomenon

According to Dr. Eric Edsinger, cats are not meant to live indoors: “Adult housecats do exhibit a broad base of natural behaviors that can become compromised when housed exclusively indoors.”

This is because there aren’t sufficient environmental challenges that allow adult housecats to reproduce the natural hunting skills and abilities that they have developed over time. Cats who are brought up in captivity usually develop coping strategies for life inside which include territorial marking with urine, hiding behavior, and play.

Many cats live indoors for comfort and safety, which outweighs these concerns. Neutering or spaying can also help to relieve any stress brought on by female-initiated behavioral issues like yowling or fighting with other female housecats.

Adult housecats

Adult housecats may prefer their own company over human interaction, but they still appreciate the attention that is lavished on them by owners who care about them! It’s important to remember that more than anything else, adult housecats are independent creatures with their own natural instincts–we just happen to be lucky enough to share our lives with them!

Cats are most active at night

When your cat is indoors only, he or she has several environmental challenges that are missing from the domestic environment of a housecat — for example, no other female cats with whom to compete for resources which includes food dishes and litter boxes–and the absence of predators means that there’s nowhere to go when an indoor cat becomes frightened stressed out by some sound or event.

Another factor is a cat’s innate need for a sense of security, found in the high ground and elevated position which is why you often see your cat perched on top of a fridge or other piece of furniture. Cats are most active at night because it’s quieter, and prey is more easily located by sight rather than sound.

Cats can live up to 20 years, but they pass away much earlier if all they have to look forward to each day is hours spent alone indoors without opportunities for exercise or mental stimulation–the boredom that sets in from lack of activity will shorten their lifespan drastically.
